This week in Class 3 we have been learning all about area and perimeter. We started by measuring areas with postcards, counting squares and then calculating areas using our times tables. All the children worked really hard and enjoyed their maths this week because we know that “WE CAN DO MATHS!”

In literacy we have been looking at the punctuation and sentence structure of speech. We have found out how to punctuate speech by popping a speech bubble leaving only the “ “ marks behind.

We took a boring piece of speech and added detail to make it more interesting.

In History, we have been studying the weighing of the heart ceremony. We then designed our own power point presentations showing what we had found out. We presented these to the rest of the class which was fun.

This week we made some mothers day cards and wrote a poem to go inside telling our Mums just how special they are to us.

Happy Mothers Day!

Huge Well Done to all those children who took part in the Cross Country event this week. Our Year 3 and 4 boys team consisted of Matthew Stokoe, Ben Mason, Joseph Mathwin, Jude Humphrey, Daniel Jones and Harry Armstrong. Our Year 3 / 4 girls team consisted of Bethany Tavernor, Emily Stewart, Molly Salter, Lucy Wright, Lucy Barnham and Jordana Thompson. All the children ran extremely well and did St. Chad’s proud. Special congratulations to Lucy Wright who came 2nd in the competition and has been invited to take part in the county cross country run.

World book day was a lot of fun, we had so many activities happening all based around our favourite thing…READING! We made book marks, told stories, wrote book reviews on bricks to make a reading wall in the shape of a pyramid. We really liked DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) where whenever we heard the school bell we had to do just that, even the teachers joined in.

Finally we had our second fundraising event for CAFOD, crazy hair day. Well done to everyone who took part, I got a real shock when I returned after my course on Friday afternoon, you all looked ….well, erm….crazy!

Welcome back everyone from our lovely half term break, Class 3 have come back full of energy and they have needed it as this week has been busy.

In maths we have been exploring data handling. How we can collect data using a table, making bar graphs (which is not as easy as it seems) and been able to ask questions and draw conclusions about the data we collected.

In literacy we have been improving those ‘boring’ sentences! After we found many different ways to improve sentences we used some of the Key Stage 1 books and rewrote the stories adding more detail and description.

In R.E. we have been learning about special meals, especially Jesus’ last supper. We used drama to act out some of the important events which happened at the meal and discussed the important words and actions Jesus said and did.

On Wednesday, the school nurse came in to talk to us about healthy eating and how to keep our teeth and gums healthy and clean. I was very proud of the children as they were lots of questions (so they did remember some of the things Mrs Robertson taught them in September!). They also asked very sensible questions in a polite and mature manner. Well done Class 3.

This week we welcomed a new member to our class, Mrs Laidler, who will be helping us with some of our lessons.

Thursday was a lot of fun as we began our series of fundraising events for CAFOD. Dress as a man/woman day was a huge success. Elvis and Captain Hook made an appearance in our classroom and extra special thanks and praise to Jude who was the only brave boy to dress up in our class, what a ‘Belle’!

One last plea, we still need Pringles tubes etc. for our art, so if anyone has an empty tube, please send them in as soon as possible. Thanks.

The children were becoming bored at playtime so this week we have been looking at new and different games that we could play in the playground. We worked with Class 4 and found that there are many games to play other than “Bulldog”!

Duck, duck goose, Cat and mouse, take the ship are just a few. If parents have any other ideas for games that maybe you played when you were young then please pass these onto your child so we can build up a bank of games to play.

Finally, a request, can you please collect pringles tubes etc. for our art project. All will be revealed next half term!

This week we have been designing our photograph frames with an Egyptian theme. We looked at different ancient Egyptian patterns and tried to use some of them in our designs.

We are reading, reading, reading and thoroughly enjoying the quizzes that we take. It really is making us think more carefully about the books we read.

Our Egyptian display is growing as we learn about the great pyramids, life as an ancient Egyptian and what the pharaohs got up to all day.

In maths Mrs Robertson showed us a way to remember how to find the fraction of a number, it’s a groovy little dance! We also challenged Mrs. Moore to a contest based on the 9 X’s table and we won 5-0. She was very gracious in defeat and has set us another challenge for next week. Our 6X’s table, better get learning them now!!!!

In literacy we are learning how to take effective notes. Our challenge this week was taking notes about the great pyramids. Sarah is explaining it all to Bethany in the photo.

This week we have really got our teeth stuck into our Egyptian topic. We are using all our research skills that we have acquired through literacy lessons to investigate different aspects of Ancient Egyptian life. This week we have studied farming, focusing on the seasons and why they were so important. We also looked at how to find evidence from artefacts preserved from Ancient Egyptian times.

Mrs Robertson was very pleased with our homework this week and some is been put up on display in the classroom. Our homework was researching King Menes and discovering why he was so important.

We have been researching some of the Ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses, some of them are really very strange looking. We found this really fun using the computers and our topic books to make our own fact files.

In D.T. we have been using construction kits to make some stable structures. We made tables, chairs and bridges.

In Numeracy we have been continuing our times tables and we are definitely getting faster and better. We have also been using our knowledge of times tables to help to divide.

In Science we have been examining different types of rock using magnifying glasses and recording our own descriptions.

We are back at school!

This week has been a great start, finally, to 2010. We have been finding out all about explanation texts which will help us in our new history topic based on Ancient Egypt.

We have found out where Egypt is located on the world map and we have been doing research to find out facts about the great River Nile.

In maths lessons we have been practising our times tables, finding out some easy ways to learn and know our 9X’s table. Why don’t you test us on our knowledge? We have been multiplying numbers by 10 & 100 and some have even been multiplying larger numbers.

This week we have looked at some Egyptian writing and have started to research photograph frames in D.T.

Mrs Jackson and Mrs Hannon are working hard to sort out all our reading books ready for our new accelerated reading programme. They are doing a great job, well done ladies!

WHAT A BUSY WEEK!

First of all children from Class 3 & 4 represented our school in a swimming gala at Woodhouse Close leisure centre. 11 schools took part and we as a team came 5th overall.

Neve Mason swam like a fish to come first in the year 3/4 girls backstroke and Ben Mason came 3rd in the year 3/4 boys backstroke.

The dress rehearsal went well on Monday and all I can say is WOW! What a performance on Tuesday and Wednesday night. The children were absolutely amazing and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

The countdown has begun with calendars been made, check out ours inspired by stained glass windows. Rudolph is the main character on our Christmas cards this year, watch out for his nose! We have written acrostic Christmas poems to go inside.

In between all of this we have still had time to do a little testing to see how we have improved so far this year.

Next week, on Monday it is our Christmas party, so remember to put your glad rags on, your special dancing shoes and bring plenty of joyful, Christmas spirit.

It’s nearly here!  Yes it’s nearly time for our Christmas Production, ‘Countdown to Christmas.  As you can see in the picture, the clock is nearing midnight!  In preparation Class 3 have all been busy making props, some of which can be seen in these pictures.

However, that doesn’t mean that we haven’t been doing any written work.  After a term of learning it is necessary to ascertain what everyone has learnt, so, in the midst of our preparations for the play, we have also found time to complete our literacy assessments.

Tick, tock, tick, tock, in Maths we are studying time so now is the time to practise at home using analogue and digital clocks.

In Art/ D.T. we are progressing well with our models for a new Willy Wonka factory. I’m looking forward to seeing the final results.

Finally we had some very special guests as Wizard William brought along his theatre group and we were all thoroughly entertained.

12th November 2009

This week we had a special visitor. Mr Jones came to see how we are doing in our Literacy lessons. We showed him how we can read and annotate texts and change them into a script. Each group had a different ‘trick’ taken from Roald Dahl’s ‘The Twits’, we made up a script for each scene including stage directions. Then we rehearsed them and finally put them all together as a short play.

Science

In science we have started a new topic looking at electricity. We made a circuit using batteries, wires and bulbs. We found out a bit about the history of electricity and who invented the light bulb. We also looked at some of the dangers of electricity and how to stay safe in the home.

It has been yet another busy week in Class 3.

In maths we have been learning some of our times tables and some have been hearing all about the subtraction neighbours and how they help each other out. We tried some maths games on the IWB, can anyone get past level 4 on ‘Powerlines’? Keep trying Class 3!

In Literacy we have been looking at the features of instructional texts. We wrote instructions of how to catch a dream based on a piece of text from The B.F.G. and then wrote a description of the dreams we caught in P.E. on bottles ready for the B.F.G. to put on his shelf.

These have been made into a lovely Class 3 book of dreams.

We are all looking forward to our trip to see Fantastic Mr. Fox on Friday!

Sandwiches!

Class 3 have been making some healthy sandwiches this week.

Miss Connor even dropped in for a bite, although she got a bit of a shock when she found out that these were made from sponge, tissue and even pencil shavings. “They look so real!” she exclaimed.

Luckily, she didn’t try some of our special sandwiches that we made for characters from stories by Roald Dahl. Check out the sandwich made by Molly and Lucy for Mr. and Mrs. Twit from ‘The Twits’. Inside there are slugs, worms, blood and on the top birds legs!

Money, money, money!

There has been money madness in Class 3 this week. We have been playing games to help us learn all about money.

We even had a shop where we had to find the correct money to buy things and the shop keepers had to give the correct change.

A shopping spree on the Interactive Whiteboard was a real hit.

Special thanks to Mrs Robertson’s son for letting us use some of his toys in our shop!
