As a school, we are striving to ensure that the protected characteristics under the Equalities Act of 2010 are recognised in our community.
Last Autumn we signed up for the ‘Educate and Celebrate’ award programme, supported by Durham County Council, giving St Chad’s staff and governors the training and resources to provide the children at St Chad’s with the opportunity to learn and talk about the 9 protected characteristics of the Equality Act which entirely resonate with our school mission statement of ‘Come as you are and walk with us’.
The Equality Act 2010 includes the ‘Public Sector Equality Duty’, which states that every public body, including schools and academies, have legal duty to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations between people who share and do not share the following protected characteristics:
◦religion or belief
◦pregnancy & maternity
◦marriage and civil partnership
‘Educate & Celebrate’ is a national charity working to prepare children and young people for life and to give them a good understanding of how Equality and Diversity is protected by the Equality Act 2010.
