Class 4 March 1st to March 5th 2010

All of the children who attended the inter-school cross country competition at St. John’s did St. Chad’s proud! The Class 4 teams consisted of Jack Armstrong, Jack McLeod, Ethan Dixon, Thomas Tavernor, Aaron Burton and Dylan Dawson for the boys, and Alice Hughes, Katie Bradley, Emily Lamb, Ellie Clayton, Jane Hayman and Enya Clark for the girls. A huge well done to all the children who volunteered to take part. They ran their socks off!

World Book Day was lots of fun at St. Chad’s this year. The children were involved in all sorts of activities throughout the day, including popping down to Class 1 and Class 2 at various points in the day to read the children their favourite stories. Miss Connor’s favourite feature of the day was “DEAR”, standing for Drop Everything And Read. At various points in the day the school bell was rung, at which point all children and staff had to down tools and pick up a book for a few minutes. What a treat!

Friday saw the arrival of our second CAFOD fundraiser, with Crazy Hair Day! Well done to all those children who made such a big effort with weird and wonderful hairstyles. Jack Armstrong gets full marks for artistic design, having gone to the trouble of making a star stencil to use in his funky style!

Class 2 February 22nd to February 26th 2010

We returned to school and it was straight down to business. In Design Technology (DT) the children had to design and build houses using sheets of cardboard. An important part of their work was to decide which tools and materials were best suited for the task.

On Wednesday afternoon we had some very important visitors; Andrew, a fireman, came with some of his friends to talk to everyone about fire safety. He told everyone not to touch matches or lighters and to make sure that candles were not put in dangerous places e.g. on top of the television. Everyone was given some homework too – they had to make sure they learnt their home address and they also had to make sure that their fire alarm was tested!

In Literacy this week we have been studying the book Handa’s Surprise. We have been focusing on re-telling the story, both in writing and through drama. We have also been thinking especially hard about the adjectives we can use to make our work more interesting.

Class 3 February 22nd to February 26th 2010

Welcome back everyone from our lovely half term break, Class 3 have come back full of energy and they have needed it as this week has been busy.

In maths we have been exploring data handling. How we can collect data using a table, making bar graphs (which is not as easy as it seems) and been able to ask questions and draw conclusions about the data we collected.
In literacy we have been improving those ‘boring’ sentences! After we found many different ways to improve sentences we used some of the Key Stage 1 books and rewrote the stories adding more detail and description.
In R.E. we have been learning about special meals, especially Jesus’ last supper. We used drama to act out some of the important events which happened at the meal and discussed the important words and actions Jesus said and did.
On Wednesday, the school nurse came in to talk to us about healthy eating and how to keep our teeth and gums healthy and clean. I was very proud of the children as they were lots of questions (so they did remember some of the things Mrs Robertson taught them in September!). They also asked very sensible questions in a polite and mature manner. Well done Class 3.
This week we welcomed a new member to our class, Mrs Laidler, who will be helping us with some of our lessons.
Thursday was a lot of fun as we began our series of fundraising events for CAFOD. Dress as a man/woman day was a huge success. Elvis and Captain Hook made an appearance in our classroom and extra special thanks and praise to Jude who was the only brave boy to dress up in our class, what a ‘Belle’!
One last plea, we still need Pringles tubes etc. for our art, so if anyone has an empty tube, please send them in as soon as possible. Thanks.

Class 4 February 22nd to February 26th 2010

Many of the children got into the spirit of things and took part in our first CAFOD fundraising event this week. We saw some fabulous costumes, staff and children alike and raised over £100! Miss Connor’s favourite Class 4 outfits were those of Ethan and Declan. Well done everybody!

Cycling proficiency training began this week, with children and instructors braving the wintry conditions to get stuck in! They began with full safety checks of all the bicycles, before doing some activities to check braking and signalling skills. All of the children thoroughly enjoyed it and are looking forward to the next session.

Class 4 children had a fantastic morning at St. John’s on Friday, working in the DT workshop with Mr Adair. They each had the opportunity to make a wooden noughts and crosses game, including using hacksaws and the large drilling machines. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves (although the drilling was a little taxing for Miss Connor’s ‘health and safety’ nerves!!) and I’m sure you’ll agree that the end products are brilliant! Well done Class 4, you were a credit to St. Chad’s!
